LOTTO 649 SCAM
The Woodstock Police Force has received calls from members of the public regarding a scam that has recently hit our area.
The scam involves a phone call from an individual claiming to be from Lotto 649. The caller provides a fake badge number, as well as a phone number for "the office", and is then advising that, in exchange for a fee of a few hundred dollars, you can collect the winnings of a much larger sum of money and a new vehicle.
NEVER WITHDRAW OR HAND OVER MONEY TO SOMEONE CLAIMING IT IS NECESSARY TO RECEIVE A LARGER PRIZE. If you receive a suspicious call or message, stop communicating. Do not provide any personal or banking information.
Scammers impersonate many organizations, including businesses, banks, government agencies, and even law enforcement to gain your trust and steal your money. Even if a call comes from a local number, it is important to verify the source. End the call, and if you want to confirm the validity, contact the agency using an official, verified phone number.
If you have already had one of these calls and given them any personal/financial information please contact your bank so they can help you protect your money. You can also call the Canadian Fraud Centre toll free at 1-888-495-8501 or online at: antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/
